What is a host and why do you need one?

Think of the hosting as your home and your furniture, TV and other stuff are your files, emails, documents and media.

You can’t get your website live without a host. No one will see or be able to navigate to your website or blog. What you actually pay for, is the server space that you rent from a web hosting provider to store all the information and documents needed to get your site live on the internet.

At the end of this Bluehost review, you’ll be able to decide whether to purchase Bluehost or not. Let’s get started.

What is Bluehost?

Bluehost is a web hosting company owned by Endurance International Group (EIG). They are one of the 20 largest web hosts in the world with powering over 2 million domains. Their servers operate in Provo, Utah, and Bluehost has over 750 employees in its Utah facility. Suhaib Zaheer is the CEO since 2017 and founded in 2003 by Matt Heaton. They are recommended by WordPress.org since 2005.

Hosting Types

Bluehost offers more than what you can expect at bargain prices. They have got many types of hosting plans and packages for everyone at every price. Their shared hosting starts at $3.95 per month, dedicated hosting starts at $79.99 per month, and VPS hosting plans start at $18.99 per month.

They also have a special plan for WordPress users that provides extra speed, security, and features with three packages starting at $19.95 per month. Their extra features include Jetpack analytics (Basic, Premium, and Pro), Scheduled and unlimited backups, business review tools, Bluehost SEO tools, video compression, PayPal integration, and more. They have three eCommerce hosting packages powered by WooCommerce starting at $6.95 per month.

Bluehost Uptime and Performance

Uptime is one of the most important aspects of a host – your users and readers can’t access your website if it’s down, so you will surely lose visitors and sales. The average uptime for a host should be at least 99.95%, but that still it’s about 20 minutes of being down in a month. So here comes Bluehost to keep you up.

Bluehost has one of the best uptimes in the hosting industry as we ran some tests and got a 99.99% average uptime for the past 12 months. So we can conclude that Bluehost is one of the most reliable hosting providers out there.

The uptime is good, they have good features, but what about speed?

In 2016, Google found that most of the websites are way too slow for mobile devices. Too many websites lost their SERPs ranks after Google’s mobile-first index update.

Bluehost won’t let you down, they are the 5th fastest host out there with an average of 411 ms response time. The more time it takes to load a website, the lower the sales and traffic are going to be.

Fast loading time is important for everyone and for that, Bluehost comes with Cloudflare CDN integration. Cloudflare is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) or a network that serves the cached version of your website.

Translation: When someone navigates to your site, Cloudflare will send them content from a CDN point closest to them (shorter distance = shorter travel time = faster load time).

Think of it this way. If you’re in L.A. and order a pizza, do you want to have to wait for it to be delivered from Miami? Or would you rather it be delivered from somewhere near you?

With Bluehost you can simply create a Cloudflare account and connect it with your website.

Security and Backups

Even though Bluehost is cheaper than most of hosting provider, they still offer good features to keep your website secure and running. They offer free SSL with all their plans and Bluehost uses SiteLock to scan your website daily for viruses and malware and they monitor their servers 24/7.

All their plans include a domain privacy feature to prevent hackers from finding and using this information for phishing or penetrating schemes to trick you or others into handing over sensitive information.

Bluehost uses CodeGuard as a layer to protect your site and create daily, weekly and monthly backups so you can roll back the previous versions of your website.

However, the Bluehost knowledgebase states: “We do offer complimentary backups for our customers. They are created on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. These backups are not guaranteed in any way. We highly recommend all Bluehost customers create and manage their own backups.”

To create or manage your own backups, Bluehost suggests that you use a third-party software tool called Site Backup. Bluehost recommends that you store all your backups offline. You can also purchase the “Pro” version of Site Backup for a fee.

Altogether, Bluehost offers good security features to keep your site safe.

Support

Without some good support, a host loses too much value. Bad support is like leaving your guests on their own or making them cook their own food.

When it comes to support, the best customer support comes with 24/7 live chat, telephone, support tickets, and fast email response, but Bluehost will disappoint you a bit.

I’m not saying that they are not good, they are, but not good enough for a web hosting provider with more than 2 million domains registered. The problem is with their technical support team.

They are excellent with minor issues, but sometimes they will disappoint you as I tried to fix my CodeGuard account and could not get much out of it.

You can test drive their live chat before purchase and see for yourself how they do. User reviews are mixed for Bluehost’s customer support, some are very happy with it and some are not so happy with the support they got from Bluehost.

Bluehost offers a 30 day no questions asked money-back guarantee, which is something we can’t deny and will let you test drive their hosting services. But:

  • You will only be refunded on the web host, not domain and extra tool or add-ons.
  • $15.99 will be deducted for the domain fee if you received a free domain name with the hosting package that you have purchased.
  • Any request after 30 days will be denied.

If you care for customer support, you might want to try SiteGround. They have a totally different approach to their customer support. On their live chat page, you can see the profile of the person you are chatting with and you can see their user rating.

Ease of use

There are way too many hosting providers out there, but most of them are not for beginners. Some have a very complicated user interface and this can make it hard for a non-technical to get their website live.

Bluehost’s control panel (cPanel) has a very friendly interface that can help non-techies learn and easily manage their site. In most cases, you just have to point and click.

Bluehost cPanel

They do have some advanced features for professionals, but altogether Bluehost is very easy to use and user friendly.

You can also use Bluehost’s website builder tools like Weebly or Drupal to start with an easy template and customizing by just dragging-and-dropping features.
